Joey Issa Values Giving Back to his Community!

G2K Honours Joe Issa

Chairman of Cool Corp and philanthropist Joe Issa has been honoured by the St. Mary Chapter of Generation 2000 (G2K) for his generous financial support, at its 2nd anniversary celebration held at Daniels Garden in Tower Isle, St. Mary on October 25, 2014.

“We were celebrating our second anniversary last month and we thought we would give some a2014-10-25 11.01.56wards to our sponsors. Mr. Issa is one of those persons who have been with us ever since we established the chapter in St. Mary and has always provided financial support for our community projects,” said Chairperson of G2K St. Mary Chapter, Yanique Chambers.

Joey was among three sponsors and 24 chapter members who were honoured for their outstanding service to the various committees, including membership growth & retention, research and policy development, outreach and community service, special projects and fundraising and Political Affairs.

Generation 2000 St. Mary Chapter was launched on September 22, 2012 at the Rio Nuevo Great House. Since then it has implemented several community projects. These include the annual children’s treat in Annotto Bay, St Mary in December 2013 when over 200 Children were fed, a beach cleanup at the Pagee Beach in Port Maria in February where residence were given information on environmental preservation, and a soca party fundraiser in March and April.

In May, a public forum on unemployment & entertainment was held in Annotto Bay, as well as the annual walkathon in Ocho Rios in aid of three Labour Day project at the Tacky High School, Donnington Primary School and Woodpark Community Center.

Other initiatives undertaken in 2014 included a public forum on Agriculture in Gayle, St. Mary; and an August 16 visit to the home of Ms. Ellaine Allen in Haywood Hall, St. Mary, a cervical cancer patient. Ms. Allen received toiletries, basic food items and school supplies for her two daughters.

“We undertake these events as our contribution to building a better St. Mary and in turn a better Jamaica,” Chambers said, noting that some of their upcoming events include a visit to the Port Maria SDA Church for praise & worship on November 29 and their annual Christmas children’s treat in Carron Hall, St. Mary on December 21, 2014.

In addition to St. Mary, G2K has set up chapters in other parishes, colleges and universities, as well as in the Diaspora, with the mission of strengthening the JLP’s political organisation in pursuit of good governance, promoting a spirit of political unity and understanding that will break down the walls of political tribalism, and embracing the moral and civic obligations of Jamaicans through community outreach and social development programmes.

In response to being honoured, Joey said “it is a great feeling to be honoured by your peers even though the pleasure was all mine … I was happy to be able to make a little difference for a better St. Mary and Jamaica.”

G2K was formed in December 1999 under the slogan “More than just Politics”, as a political action group seeking change in how public affairs are administrated in Jamaica. It is an affiliate of the Jamaica Labour Party made up of young professionals who represent a wide cross-section of economic and social interests from various constituencies and parishes across the country.

Located at Office 1 upstairs the Joe Issa-led Cool Oasis service station in Rio Nuevo, the Chapter holds monthly meetings every last Wednesday commencing at 6:00 p.m. There are over 75 members at present.
